Mission Director Annie Herrada has never faced a crisis like this before: two astronauts are missing in space. Starforge, a near-future asteroid mining station outside the moon’s orbit, appears to be functioning perfectly. The communications links are online, the cabin is full of breathable air, and the fleet of mining bots is still digging away on the surface of asteroid 5E. But Chloe Girmay and Robbie Poels aren’t there.

Annie and her team in Mission Control investigate every possibility they can imagine. Is Starforge really empty, or could someone have hacked into their systems to make it appear that way? Was it a murder-suicide? It’s no secret that Robbie and Chloe didn’t get along. And after a telescope spots a mysterious object lingering in the vicinity, even an alien intelligence doesn’t seem absurd. But one possibility looms large above all others: Bao Chuan, a nearby Chinese mining station which has been overtly hostile to Starforge’s presence at 5E. Were Chloe and Robbie kidnapped? Did they defect? Or have the Chinese deployed some type of advanced cyber-weaponry to conceal their actions? 

The answer could start a war.
